Your face says a lot about you as a person. In many ways, it provides others with a lasting impression of who
you are, how you feel and what you think. Diet and exercise can help many areas of the body, but nothing seems
to affect those fatty deposits in your cheeks, chin, jawline or neck. These areas don't usually respond to
diet and exercise. They can also obscure who you really are.
Now, Facial Liposuction can provide you with a solution. Facial Liposuction can make a dramatic change in the way
you look by removing the excess fat from your cheeks, chin and neck
What is facial liposuction?
Liposuction surgery is performed to actually remove unwanted localized deposits of fat cells from the body.
Liposuction was originally designed for body contouring. Your Liposuction surgeon uses a special tube called
a cannula. The cannula is inserted through a tiny incision placed in an inconspicuous location on the face or
neck. Using a suction syringe or pump attached to the cannula, the fat cells are extracted. The result is a
resculpting of bulging areas into more attractive and more youthful facial contours.
In younger patients, facial liposuction may be done alone. In older patients, it may produce optimal results
when combined with a facelift, browlift, eyelid or nose surgery. It is often performed with the addition of
chin or cheek implants for better definition.
Am I a good candidate for facial liposuction?
Most men and women who have localized facial fatty deposits are good candidates for facial liposuction
provided they:
- Are in good health.
- Have fat deposits disproportionate to the rest of their bodies.
- Have good skin elasticity.
- Have realistic expectations.
Is the fat removal permanent after facial liposuction surgery?
Yes! After puberty, we do not create many new fat cells. When you gain weight, you expand the fat cells
that you have. facial liposuction permanently removes fat cells to improve your facial contour.
Should you gain weight after liposuction, it goes to the fat cells that remain in your body. The localized
fatty deposits that existed prior to liposuction can no longer balloon up out of proportion to the
surrounding areas.
Will I need a second facial liposuction procedure?
One procedure is usually sufficient. However, some patients require a fine-tuning procedure at a future date.
Your Chicago plastic surgeon will assist in determining if you need more than one procedure.
Is facial liposuction for me?
If excess fatty tissue in your face or neck is bothering you, Facial Liposuction may be your answer. Your
Chicago plastic surgeon can help you determine what the best treatment will be to obtain your desired results
How will I look after facial liposuction surgery?
The changes following facial liposuction can be dramatic. The use of smaller cannulas allow the fibrous
connections between your skin and body to remain. These connections will contract over time. As a result,
excessive neck skin folds are so rare that many patients avoid the necessity for surgical skin removal
by having excellent results with facial liposuction alone.
What is recover like after facial iposuction surgery?
One or two small stitches may be needed to close the tiny incisions. You will wear a snug elastic dressing
over the treated area for a few days, and you may be advised to wear it at night for a few weeks. You will
go home after the procedure and rest for at least 24 hours. Mild pain relievers may be needed along with
cold packs for a few days. Most patients resume normal activities after 2 - 4 days. Your Chicago plastic
surgeon will guide you with specific instructions on the recovery and tailor this to your individual needs.
You may be groggy from the anesthetic and/or oral medications and probably won't remember much of the
first day or two. You will have to take it easy and sleep on two pillows to keep your head elevated for
7-14 days - or however long your surgeon suggests. When you wake up you will notice that your neck and
lower face will look even more swollen in the first 3 days. But, as the days go on the swelling will
dissipate. There may be bruising, but this will go away, as well. So make a mental note of this or you
may be shocked into a depression. Bruising and swelling are a normal occurrence in most surgeries.
You will more than likely experience some discomfort for several weeks - if you had intraoral incisions
your diet may be restricted. You should ascertain all fresh fruits and vegetables have been washed, no raw
fish (sushi), very rare meat or other types of foods that may contain high amounts of bacteria. Eating foods
such as this may increase your risk of infection due to the incisions being in the mouth. You may be
instructed to rinse with Listerine several times a day. DO NOT PICK or "tongue" your incisions or sutures!
Although any discomfort should be alleviated by your prescribed pain medication if you have excessive pain,
redness, pus or other symptoms that do not appear normal, contact your surgeon immediately! Take your
emperature regularly. An elevated temperature could mean an infection. Take those antibiotics on time.
Also, don't forget if you are a female taking birth control pills that some antibiotics can interfere so
in the event that you do have relations, use another form of protection as well.
Your sutures will more than likely be taken out by your surgeon any time between 5-10 days postoperatively.
Even though you may feel better, you must take it easy for the first 3 weeks. Be careful not to bend over or
lift heavy objects. And be careful not to raise the blood pressure for at least 3 weeks as this could cause
internal bleeding at your treatment area. Your blood vessels dilate to allow increased blood flow when you
raise your heart rate. This may cause problems at internal wound sites. Do not participate in contact sports
for at least 6 to 8 weeks - although ask your Chicago cosmetic surgeon what he recommends specifically.
Your swelling will subside within a few weeks, defining even more temporary change in your smile if you have
had an intraoral approach, odd sensations of "hollowness" under your chin, tingling, the sporadic sharp pain,
or "pulling", burning, and cold sensations. These usually subside within the first few weeks.
Potential risks of facial liposuction surgery
Unfortunately, all surgery has risks and complications. With facial liposuction, these include allergic
reaction to the anesthetic used and infection. There could be asymmetry, general dissatisfaction, hematoma or
seroma, lumpiness, and/or mottling. Numbness is possible, it usually subsides within the first few weeks but
it may become a permanent issue. Puckering of the skin may occur and deeper than desired depressions may
result. Excess scar tissue and lumps are possible as well.
